Length:: 7:58 Mins

I own some number of bluetooth wireless speaker systems, the last of which is this Bose Soundlink. But I also own the Altec Lansing iMW725 inMotion Air common Wireless Speaker and considering its sound quality and price, its an very respectable consideration.

The Bose Soundlink speaker system is a well made, except for the aux input on the back panel which looks unfinished, otherwise it’s considerable in construction. It is a bit hefty for a really movable speaker, based on what your meaning of movable is. I have compared the sound of the Bose Soundlink to quite some other speakers, as well as the aforementioned Altec Lansing iMW725 and it is got good sound, but it is surely not the golden standard by which all speakers should be judged.

The integrated cover/stand guards the speaker when its not used but also serves as the speaker base/stand when the speaker is in use. The magnetic closure works really well and an added feature is that if the speaker is operating, simply closing the cover automatically turns off the speaker. That is a thoughtful touch.

The speaker just exudes quality. I really do not understand how Bose could leave the aux input looking so unfinished though. It is really odd since it is so evident. Maybe it is not a big deal, but for a comparatively costly part of gear, I expect more. If feels good, it seems good and the sound is decent though I could not say it was spectacular.

It does have the capability to play deafening and produces a considerable total of bass for a speaker so small. Bose is recognized for doing amazing things in the way their speakers produce bass and this speaker is no exemption. But good the bass is, I did find this speaker missing clearness and meaning in the mid and high range. When this speaker is compared side by side to the Altec Lansing iMW725, the difference is profound. I can not tell you it is “better” than the Bose because that’s a subjective judgement. For me, I do like the clearness of sound the Altec Lansing gives over the Bose Soundlink. But the Bose does produce more bottom end sound if that is what you like, you may favor the Bose for that reason.

The Bose Soundlink has the capability to remember up to six different bluetooth devices which is great. If you try to add a seventh device, it’ll simply “forget” one of the earlier paired devices to make room for the new device. No worries though, you may be able to generally add the “forgotten” device back at a afterward time.

There is no remote control provided and that is not really a big deal because if you are using an iPhone, for example, you may be able to control the volume of the output of the iPhone on the phone itself, also as stopping, pausing or changing song selections. But I can see where having a remote may be an advantage in many situations.

The volume control lacks any indication of where you’re on the scale of volume though the Bose has a volume display that will blink twice when the minimum or maximum level was reached. But you do not really have any idea where you’re on that scale visually.

There is no tone modification on the speaker, all modifications of that nature could must be made on the device from which the Soundlink is paired to.

The capability to hook up an auxillary device via the provided mini plug cable is useful especially if you want to hook up an mp3 player or another device that doesn’t have any bluetooth capability. I have effectively paired a laptop, iPhone and desktop computer, all with bluetooth to the Soundlink with no difficulty whatsoever.

Overall I like the Bose Soundlink though I do not feel as strongly about the quality of the sound. It’s quite compact in size still is hard. I can not really believe that it gets as deafening as it does with little distortion (always remember the “garbage in garbage out” maxim though. It’ll not magically make low bit rate mp3′s sound good.) It “feels” good, has excellent build quality (except for the funky looking aux input,) it seems good and the batteries last a good long time. You may be able to expect anywhere from 3 6 hours based on how deafening you have the system playing.

I could really recommend you listen to it before buy if possible. As I have said, the Altec Lansing iMW725 is 30 40 less in cost and to my ears gives an excellent sound, better balanced with no heaviness or boominess in the low end, with much better stereo separation than the Bose and it has a remote control! But the form factor is different and in that regard I favor the Bose.

It’s worth mentioning that there are a range of different colored covers available for the Soundlink. They are a bit pricey but do let you to make yours stand out from the default grayish cover. And speaking of the cover, I do have many concern as to if the continual flexing of the cover as you open and close it’ll sooner or later lead to issues like the eventual failure of the stitching or cover material itself at the bending point. Time will tell I guess. I am not docking any stars for this but I’m going to update my review if I ever begin to notice any issues with the cover. Since I do not have the leather cover, but the nylon, I dont have idea how the leather cover will fare.

So I am giving the Bose Soundlink a 3 star ranking. I think it is OK. Yes, it’s solidly built and looks to have good build quality. I just do not think that the sound quality is demonstrably better than alternative merchandise. I feel that for the premium price it should be accompanied by obviously superior sound and I believe it falls a bit short. But, I think that judging sound is subjective and what one person may find nice, another person may disagree. So for this reason it’s vital that you listen 1st and choose after that. It is not a bad speaker system by any stretch but it’s what it’s.

I’m writing this about five hours after having received the Bose SoundLink Wireless Speaker. I opened the box, took the speaker out and in two minutes paired it with my Toshiba Thrive Tablet. I then played many classical music and said to myself, “Oh my goodness!” The sound of these speakers is amazing. The violins sound clear and distinct. Horns sound undistorted and smooth. The piano sounds like you’re in the 1st row of the concert hall. The bass is at just the right mix with the mid level and higher sounding instruments. The clearness of the sound is what stands out.

I then paired up an IPOD touch and played “Never My Love” by the affiliation. The vocals were clear and distinct and the instrumentation mixed in nicely. I’m no audiophile but I’m pretty discriminating. At some number of volume levels, these speakers sound great. They’re among the best I have ever listened to.

With all of this, these speakers are movable due to fitted battery. You may be able to take these anywhere and have the quality of music. Amazing!

I haven’t seen any indication of many issues some critics mentioned. There was virtually no distortion and the sound didn’t seem to me to be compressed and equalized as many observed.

Yes, you’re paying a premium for a Bose product, but if you want quality, then this product is worth it.

I look forward to many hours of immersion in my favorite music, sounding clear and true.

Bose hit a home run with this. I want to make it clear that this is an honest review and I dont have connection with Bose whatsoever. Purchase this and enjoy. I could give it six stars if I could.

I newly bought a Jambox because I looked for a small wireless speaker that I could just throw in a bag and take wherever. While the size of the Jambox was nice, I generally felt that it lacked in sound quality and felt the max volume was much too calm. Thankfully Bose presented this product while I was still in the return period with the Jambox, so I returned the Jambox and payed the extra to get the Soundlink. I wasn’t totally sure what to expect from the Soundlink. I have one of the Sounddock speakers, and the sound from that device is amazing, so I wasn’t expecting it to sound as good caused by the smaller size, but just wanted something that surpassed the Jambox in volume and sound quality.

When I got the Soundlink home and tried it out, I was totally surprised. This little thing sounds amazing! As many other reviewers said, this really does make the Jambox sound like a toy in comparison. It really is quite amazing that something this small and movable produces audio that sounds this good. It’s considerably bigger than the Jambox, but its size still makes it easy to take around in a bag. If you need a movable, wireless, battery powered speaker, you won’t find a better one than the Soundlink Mobile speaker from Bose.

Bose QC15 and Sennheiser PXC 450 and Audio Technica ATH ANC7b

Disclosure: I tried all these on an airplane. I’m not an audiophile. Sound Cancelation is the most vital attribute to me.

The Carrying Case: All three are quite lasting and inflexible.
1.) Bose the smallest, a low profile, room for an Ipod, accessories too.
2.) Sennheiser Square form, low profile, but not many of room for anything else in case.
3.) Audio Technica Nice big case if you want to carry extra stuff (Nintendo DS, ipod, etc).

Build Quality:
1.) Sennheiser you may be able to tell this is built well. Strong plastics, good parts, thick cord. Top notch. You feel like you’re to get something really high quality.
2.) Audio Technica Nice hard construction, appears lasting.
3.) Bose If this had a Sanyo logo on the side, I could not flinched. How can something $300 be so very cheaply made.

Size:
1.) Bose as far as over the ears go, they are pretty small.
2.) Audio Technica mid sized.
3.) Sennheiser they are big. No question, but they store flat.

Comfort:
1.) Sennheiser comfy, will fit nearly any size ears. Keep on for hours.
2.) Bose Also comfy. I didn’t experience “highs” discomfort.
3.) Audio Technica Perfectly acceptable. Bigger opening than last AT model.

Sound:
1.) Sennheiser I really wore these at home too, simply to hear parts of songs I had never heard before. F. My 10yr old music collection sounded totally NEW.
2.) Audio Technica Well balanced, good sound.
3.) Bose Great sound, but heavy on the bass. I listen to many of rap and pop, so it was mildly annoying. I finally had to turn my treble settings up on my ipod to balance the sound.

Features:
1.) Sennheiser nice cord, push to talk button (temporarily mutes NC and sound which is great for interruptions on airplanes).
2.) Bose/Audio Technica just the basics. Bose simply an on/off switch.

Price:
1.) Audio Technica $150 to $225 based on how you shop.
2.) Sennheiser $200 to $275
3.) Bose Hard to find below $300+.

Noise Cancelation:
1.) Bose No question here, far surpassed the other two. Best sound Cancelation.
2.) Audio Technica Good sound Cancelation.
3.) Sennheiser Not sure what happened here. Unbelievable sound, acceptable sound cancelation.

Summary:

I finally kept the Bose because I was only using these for flying and the Sennheiser’s (as much as I loved them) let me down in the sound Cancelation department. The Sennheiser’s had by far the most superior sound, but the Bose sound Cancelation was night and day. The Bose are made badly for a $300+ product, it disappointed.

Final assessment:

Audio Technica best balance of value for money
Sennheiser Best sound and comfort
Bose Best sound Cancelation

I decided to cheap out earlier and bought a pair of Sony NR headsets for $30 and change. They seemed pretty good but on flights, the NR was not good enough way too much background sound. I decided to man up and get the real deal. And boy, what a change (for the better)!

With the Bose headsets, NR means NR, they ain’t kidding about when they say NR, totally no background sound on the flight. My fast thoughts on this so far:

You have not heard true HD sound if you have not heard it on this headset. And the sound isn’t like bass or treble heavy, it is just crisp and you may be able to hear every water drop and every single instrument being played. And NR works great both ways on this headset the bordering sound is nearly cancelled out totally for you when you are using the headsets, and the sound of the sound from the headset does not perform of the headsets either. I can listen to music or movies at a pretty high volume and the person sitting beside me will not hear a thing.

The leather trim around the headsets makes them very comfy to wear. I wear them on 15 hour flights and do not feel any strain by the end of the flight. My ears or head do not hurt due to headsets and the plastic strap. They really are made for comfort.

It comes with airplane adapter so you may be able to turn it from a single 3.5mm audio cable into one that fits in the airplane sockets. The cable is removable totally from the headset, which I really find useful when I want to doze off and not be bothered by bordering sound. You do not realize how efficient the headsets are till you take them off and realize how most of background sound they eliminated!

The only one downside of this headset is that it runs on a AAA battery. So I generally have to be sure I have completely charged batteries with me at all times. I carry rechargeable batteries (Sanyo Eneloop are the BEST) with a charger. If I do run out of battery, I can generally charge it on the flight itself. ON a full charge of the Eneloop AAA, I’m still to run out of battery on a 15 hour flight.

Yes, these headsets are not cheap but they’re worth every penny. Bose puts so much research and effort into developing their merchandise, I have totally no reason to complain!

This review is from: Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic sound Cancelling Headphones (Electronics)

I bought the Bose QuietComfort 15 sound Cancelling Headphones about a month ago and am completely impressed far.

Sound Quality: As odd as this may sound, I feel like I have not ever listened to any of my songs! This headset totally revamps every song. You’ll hear things in many of your beloved songs you have not heard before. As it says in the title, this is an acoustic headset so do not expect deafening and powerful base. If you like many of base then this is not the headset for you.

Noise Cancelling: I find that I can still hear people talking while I’m on a plane but most of the background sound goes away. I could describe the sound as if you’re underwater or plugging your ears, to get you an idea of the sound. When you play many light music in the background, all the people talking tend to dissappear. I take up anywhere from 50 to 100 flights in a year and now that I own a Bose headset, I could not imagine not having it with me.

Comfort: The headset is very comfy with leather around the ear and the leather on the top of the headset. This makes it comfy for long periods of time. I used to use ear buds and found that my ears started to hurt after 30 minutes. The only thing I’ll talk about is that your ears do get a bit hot a sweaty after a while so it’s good to give them a breath of new air every hour or so.

Carrying Case: In this box comes with a carrying case to help protect your Bose headset. This was a big selling feature for me because with all the travelling I do, I has been worried about ruining my headset. This lets me to put the case in my bag and not have to worry that I’m crushing it. Great addition Bose!

Cord: though this headset is not wireless, it has a removable cord which I find useful. If you do not want to listen to anything, do not attach the cord and you may be able to relax with sound cancelling feature. If you do want to listen to music or watch a movie, attach the cord. Easy.

Batteries: The headset runs on (1) AAA battery which fits right into a nice place on the headset. I keep another AAA battery in my carrying case just in case it dies while I’m travelling. I have not had to replace the battery still and I used it for quite some flights. I’m impressed with how long it lasts!

Airplane connector: Bose also included an airplane connector which many airlines still use. I have not find a time I have had to use this but it surely is nice to have if I need it.

Downfalls: There is not much I could change about the Bose QC 15 but the most vital one could be that I can not listen to music if my battery is dead. Again this has not happened to me but if my battery were to die, I can not listen to music. You must have the sound cancelling feature on to listen to anything. Other than that, there’s nothing I could change.

Price: This headset is quite pricey so it is not meant for the average person. There are other headsets that I could recommend. But if you’re the kind of person who travels many of find yourself in places where the sound bothers you (ie train, bus, etc), this is the headset for you.

Well done Bose, you turned my into a believer and I could not imagine travelling without my calm Comfort 15!

I decided to attempt out this greatly rated bluetooth speaker for my iPad and iPhone and has been shocked at its easy use, sound quality, small footprint, portability and long battery life. I liked the choice of colors which makes these small speakers standout and easy to spot. When I 1st opened the package, I was happy that the company included some number of high quality cords as well as both short and long micro USB cords for recharging and computer synching, charge adapter, and a tangle free audio cord for non bluetooth resources. You may be able to create an account on the Jawbone MyTALK site to download voice profiles and apps. In pairing mode, it easily connected with all of our iPads and iPhones. I tested the iPad 1st with Netflix, Pandora, Hulu+, Air Video Server, and iTunes. Considering that the speaker is only the size of two stacked Wii controllers, the sound was amazingly strong, clear, full bodied, and free of hisses or pops that I experienced with other bluetooth speakers and maintained the bluetooth connection without a single drop. Next, I paired both an iPhone four and 3Gs and both easily paired with the speaker. I ran Pandora and tested the speakerphone function which worked nicely. You may be able to program a quickdial number that may be now dialed by pushing the round botton on the top when paired with a phone. You may be able to download apps for voice commands which I did not attempt since I rarely use, but the transmission and receiving sound quality is quite good. The next day, I went to work in the operating room and everyone was inquisitive when I pulled out the small speaker and placed my iPhone by its side. There is no have to bring any cords which is the real benefit of using this speaker for true convenient portability. When I started playing my Pandora selections from the iPhone, nobody in the O.R. Could believe it comed out of this small speaker. It clearly is not going to challenge a Bose SoundDock or Dr. Dre Beatbox, but we all had a nice day in the operating room doing a full day of cases with great tunes and the speaker lasted the complete day using only 50 of the battery life. At home, I has been surprised when my son played games on the iPad downstairs and the sound comed through the Jambox speakers located upstairs with perfect clearness. I researched all of the bluetooth speakers now available, and this stands out by far. Personally, I favor using this small speaker which I can pull out of my labcoat, rather than carrying around a big heavy sounddock with cords shoved in a bag. I now leave the sounddock in my office. The only reason I did not rate this 5 stars is caused by the sticker shocker price which I personally feel is a bit extreme and could be more competitive in the $150 $170 range. At the $200 pricepoint, majority of people are audiophiles and will probably make the unfair comparison to bigger sounddocks. On the other hand, this is perfect for people like myself wanting to sacrifice some room filling base rumbling sound for a really movable wireless speaker with correct sound reproduction. In general, I’m happy with my buy and will purchase another when and if the price drops.

Update 9/18/2011
True to my word, when this went on a Gold box deal for $149, I bought a second speaker for the kids who used them on camping trips to watch movies on their iPads with their friends. I have been using this daily over the past year with only some minor issues. I’m not a big fan of the new downloaded software update to add “Live Audio” sound processing which really dampens the sound volume too much to be efficient and have only noticed a subtle difference for certain music files. I suspect there will be more reviewers who will knock this device caused by dissatisifaction with the Live Audio update, but do not realize that this may be simply toggled on/off by depressing and holding the minus and plus buttons together some seconds. After buying a second one for the kids to use with their iPads, I had to change the bluetooth device names to distinguish many speakers since it’s default set as “JAMBOX by Jawbone.” If you have already synced your i”Device” you’ll notice that it’ll keep the old name. Simply go to Settings/General/Bluetooth and choose the Not Connected icon and choose “Forget this device.” This will reset the name for the device and you may be able to simply rescan and resync with the speaker to update the name in your bluetooth device list. I do not understand why there are so many poor reviews for syncing problems which I have never experienced using iOS devices. Other reviewers have also suggested the Soundfreaq SFQ 1 which has equal (to my ears, somewhat superior to others) bluetooth sound quality and comparable pricing. I like the SoundFreaq, but I still favor the JAMBOX caused by its smaller size and simple rectangular form which easily fits in my coat pocket for portability. The sound quality coupled with design factor make this a more adaptable buy. Ignore reviews that make unfair comparisons to bigger costly office/room audiophile speakers which serve different reasons. I use both the Bose SoundDock and Dr. Dre Beatbox and also really enjoyed the inexpensive, but discontinued Griffin Amplfi speaker which all give a wider and fuller sound experience but are all impractical to drag around with you.

Update 10/10/2011
The new Jambox 2.1 software upgrade fixed all the problems with the last LiveAudio upgrade. The new SoundClarity algorithm is really nice and preserves the higher volume levels. I turn the LiveAudio off when we are in the operating room and it gives nice spatial sound and turn it back on when I am alone in the office for a softer, but improved sound. I have noticed continued bad ratings complaining of recurrent bluetooth connection drops. I have two Jambox speakers (blue and black) and used them daily for ten months with our iPhones, iPads, and newly an Asus Transformer android tablet and honestly have never had a single connection drop. I use the devices to listen to music in the operating room for 8 10 straight hours and we have have never had a dropped connection. I wonder if people were unlucky to get a bad speaker or possibly their problems are really with their media devices that outdated bluetooth protocols (i.E. Non iOS devices).

I first wrote a review entitled, “Monstrously dissatisfied.” Out of the box, my Jawbone Jambox sounded horribly distorted when playing my laptop’s music. Before returning it I searched the web another time to see if there anythed that may be my fault and found a useful thread called, “Terrible Sound Quality” (link below) on Jawbone’s site. There I discovered that my Apple MacBook Air had two different drivers and the wrong one has been selected, not that I has been prompted at any point in the installation by either Jawbone or Apple. I also read that nobody knew how to choose the right driver on my operating system, Snow Leopard 10.6. With a little poking around I figured it out and now I think the Jambox is behaving the way it is supposed to.

I give the Jambox four stars because:
(a) it does a great job as a bluetooth speakerphone with my iPhone, improving a bit on the iPhone’s capacity to do that job itself. I used it in my hotel room while it charged, right out of the box. It was a couple of feet away from me as I worked and I could hear the other parties obviously and they could hear me. Then again at a meeting in an office when a speakerphone has been needed impromptu, I whipped it out and there was no fuss, just performance.
(b) As an external bluetooth speaker it gives good quality not superb but, for its size it is better than any of the other solutions I have bought over the years. It is useful to dont have cords (a corded set of speakers by the same price could outperform the Jambox). But, it’s great to have the wireless box for both my iPhone and laptop when I work around the house (my home office), and I have used it in the car enjoyably.

On another note, my twelve yr old just picked it up and took it downstairs to see how far it may travel from my laptop and still pump out the music. It was remarkable. He made it all the way downstairs to the other side of our house before losing the connection.

.

This review is from: Jawbone JAMBOX (Black Diamond) (Wireless Phone Accessory)

I already have two Foxls from Soundmatters. The Jambox is depending on the same acoustic design from Soundmatters but inside a different body and as claimed by Aliph with optimized and strengthened body design. So I hoped the Jambox could give me many improvement in sound, but i was wrong.

Both of my Foxls are different variants, the 1st one is variant 2, the new one variant 2.2 and there are important differences in sound between both. The 1st Foxl had awful bluetooth quality, separately from that my major criticism was the somewhat weak maximum volume. This improves many when plugged in, but from battery the Foxl wasn’t deafening enough for my taste ensuing in distorted sound once turned up a bit strogner. The newest Foxl is different, bluetooth quality improved and the sound is more refined. Treble is less severe while simultaneously bass is stronger in the upper frequencies, as mids are clearer than before. Unfortunately the newest Foxl suffers more at higher volume levels. The last variant applied many kind of compression/limiting to the music when turned up louder to avoid distortion. This is the common effect you also get when listening to FM radio stations. To accomplish maximum volume and drown any background sound, most radio stations apply compression to the music. The new Foxl does not do that anymore, so it distorts more quickly particularly with peak sounds like kick drums etc. It tries to avoid distortion differently. When there’s lots of bass, it lowers in general volume observably, which results in a somewhat “pumping” effect. I’m not sure if I really like the new approach better than before. The last compression was more “musical” and added some “punch” to the music at higher levels.

Now to the Jambox: It sounds more or less like the last Foxl variant with improved Bluetooth streaming quality. But the unit I received has extra problems with the housing that resonates when deeper bass notes are played. In comparison to the newest Foxl the Jambox sounds inferior by all means when listening to both at normal levels. Bass from Foxl is stronger and cleaner simultaneously, bluetooth quality is alike with both, but in comparison to a wired connection both still sound observably worse through bluetooth. At higher levels the Jambox behaves the same as the old Foxl, it looks to apply the same compression and sounds louder and less stressed than the newest Foxl, but in general I wasn’t able to detect any enhancements in sound in comparison to the “original”. In spite of of the bigger size, the Jambox still has the same low output like the Foxl. There’s no dynamic sound modification based on the output level. I begged for this for a long time. Adding a bit more bass at lower volume and taking some bass away at higher volume to optimize output at all listening levels.

The only real difference is the design. If you really want a blue, red or grey brick, you’ll be better off with a Jambox, otherwise i propose you to take the Foxl. If you do not need loudest output, the newest Foxl variant sounds certainly better and is smaller simultaneously. But the differences in maximum volume between Foxl and Jambox are in reality not that big. Both aren’t suited at all for outside listening. It should also be mentioned that when plugged in, output is cleaner and louder from the Foxl. It plays with double power (2×4 Watt) then, unlike the Jambox which only has 2×2 Watt despite if running from battery or plugged in.

I am sending my Jambox back, as I see no real advances. In spite of the rubber covering, the Jambox also dances around when playing bass heavy music. You have to use many cloth or extra rubber mat (like the one included with the Foxl) to avoid this.

I am still hoping for an improved Jambox variant. Crossingfingers

Update:
Meanwhile Jawbone has done two firmwareupdates. Variant 2.0 was a pretty catastrophe, because it lowered maximum volume a pretty bit as indicated by many disappointed users. I had not done the update as i did not want to screw up the volume of my Jambox. But many weeks afterward Jawbone came up with a fix and declared firmware 2.1. The volume issue was fixed and the user can decide now between clearness ON and OFF. OFF is the way how it was before, but ON makes the output significant lower, all the complaints, though Jawbone still claims this is to offer a clearer distortion free sound and isn’t lower at all. Well, I favor it louder to tell the truth and have set clearness to OFF.
The more interesting feature is the new “Liveaudio” setting. Pressing both volume buttons simultanously you may be able to switch between both modes. With Liveaudio the Jawbone sounds considerably bigger at low volumes. The frequency answer was tweaked for a much more bassheavy clearer sound, which is much larger simultaneously. You have the impression if the sound comed beyond the small Jambox. Unfortunately with active Liveaudio the maximum volume is as low as it’s with clearness ON and the other problem is that Liveaudio distorts at higher volume levels. It sounds pretty good with low levels up to speech volume, but turn it a bit louder (still far from maximum volume in normal mode) and Liveaudio distorts heavily, particularly obvious with bassdrum sounds, or low bassnotes etc.

I still hope Jawbone will do many more tweaks to enhance sound in future. Liveaudio shows great possible, but it should change its sound to the volume automatically, now Liveaudio is trying to push too hard in the bass department which results in significant distortion. It could have been better if Jawbone tuned the bass down, if you increase volume. I already complained, but nobody looks to listen.
