though setup is fast, it’s the high performance 802.11n dual RF bands and the creation of my own cloud storage (HD on USB port) that makes the AirPort Extreme a best in class choice!

Setup:
After reading the other reviews, I knew this goed to be fast and easy. I started a pot of coffee thinking I could enjoy a cup while plugging in the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and configuring it. Here are the steps:

1. Attached an ethernet cable from the AEBS to my ISP connection. Plugged in the AC adapter and power cord. AEBS powered up. Position light flashed green for a second, glowed amber for some number of seconds, then flashed amber till the AEBS has been configured from a computer.

2. From my MacBook Pro (wireless access works good for this step), the airport utility app had launched and waited for me (otherwise, go to Applications\Utilities\AirPort Utility.App). Followed information that included typing in a router name and two passwords. The default AEBS configuration selects channels and RF bands automatically to optimize speed.

3. Plugged a spare hard drive (in my case: Mac OS expanded (Journaled) formatted one TB HD) into AC outlet and the USB port. Once the HD had started, it showed up as a MBP network drive device on ‘Finder’. I then produced a folder, moved a file, and read it back.

At this point, the coffee machine beeped to let me know my coffee was prepared. I was done before the coffee was prepared about three minutes from opening the box to being operational! Gotta luv it.

Basic Performance Testing:
Not about to let the coffee go to waste, I proceeded with many performance testing. I conducted many basic data throughput tests by transferring files from the MBP through the AEBS to the HD. This test arrangement kept my ISP download and upload data rates out of the equation. For the wired tests, the MBP has been connected to one of the three AEBS Gigabit ports.

Test one (a control test configuration between MBP and HD via USB on MBP):
Write to HD: 33.8 MBytes/sec
Read from HD: 34.3 MBytes/sec

Test two (wired data transfer)
From MBP to AEBS via Gigabit port, then from AEBS to HD via USB): 13.6 MBytes/sec
From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP via Gigabit port): 18.3 MBytes/sec

Test three (wireless data move five GHz RF band)
From MBP to AEBS, then from AEBS to HD via USB): 7.8 MBytes/sec
From HD to AEBS via USB, then from AEBS to MBP): 12.6 MBytes/sec

Test four (range test, five GHz RF band between MBP and AEBS with a max capacity of 300 Mbits/sec):
Three ft, devices in close proximity: 300 Mbits/sec
50 ft, indoors, no ext walls in path: 243 Mbits/sec
70 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path: 144 Mbits/sec
80 ft, outdoors, one ext wall in path: 104 Mbits/sec

Default settings seem to offer high bit rate connections. Using ‘manual setup’ in Airport Utility.App, I tested some number of variations on the configuration without improving the rate/range for the 802.11n wireless offered by the default setting of the APBS. Reading data from the HD back through the AEBS to the MBP was generally faster than writing data to the HD. As well as ethernet into the data move path (Test two in comparison to Test 1) reduced data rates in half. As well as WiFi into the data move path (Test three in comparison to Test 2) reduced data rates to 2/3. Range test performance was good for distances inside 50 feet.

My own storage cloud:
Originally, I envisioned just using the HD (USB port on AEBS) as a network drive for a SVN (i.E., software variant control) repository in support of software development on my MBP. But, I realized that this drive is a common storage place for all my devices (MBP, iPad, iPhone, iTouch) that’s available wirelessly on my local WiFi. And with a VPN connection, from anywhere with WiFi access to the internet. Simply stated, I have my own cloud! We are not talking about a skimpy not many GB either, but a full TB of dedicated exclusive mine only cloud. Now, that is cool.

Why purchase the fifth generation AEBS:
High performance 802.11n wireless performance
Easy and fast setup
USB port for attaching a hard drive or printer
Capability to create my own AEBS WiFi storage cloud for all my devices
Guest access to ISP without access to other devices or attached USB device
Sleek clean stylish look

I am so totally happy with this buy.

Just to be clear on this, I did attempt the Cisco E4200, which, according with people who knows about wireless networking, is the best wireless router out there but the range wasn’t as good as the Airport Extreme. I have a town house and the router needs to be in the basement, the E4200 signal did reach the second floor, but with more than two devices connected to the router, the signal dropped so much that was unusable. With the Airport Extreme, no problems at all, the signal is fast enough with two or more devices connected. An extra perk is that with the E4200 you may be able to use the USB port just for storage but not for a printer, but with the Airport Extreme, you may be able to connect an USB Hub and have a printer an a external Hard Drive connected simultaneously. This router is a keeper.

My setup: two iPads, two iPhones, one PC, three Macs.

I switched to this router from my old modem/wireless router in one and am happy. Installation of this router was simple and painless, with the Mac doing all the work, literally. Plugged it in and OS X recognized it and setup went without a hitch. I have also paired this with an external hard drive, and now I can use Time Machine to wirelessly create backups, which is perfect for any MacBook/MacBook Pro/MacBook Air holders who do not want to continuously plug in a hard drive to let backups; just set it up and Time Machine takes care of the rest! happy buyer.

Buyer review from the Vine™ Program ()

The Linksys E3200 is, without a doubt, an remarkable product. It is one easy to set router that appears to operate reliably and comes with a couple of notable bells and whistles. But, many of the ‘high performance’ claims proved to be somewhat exaggerated and I was not impressed by the quality of user support.

SETUP (5 of 5)

One question most of us ask ourselves before proceeding to set something as frightening as a new router is ‘will I be able to make it work for me?’ The good news is that in this case the answer should be ‘probably or most probably yes.’ For a basic setup, you simply plug in the router, run the Cisco Connect app provided on a CD on a computer equipped with a Wi Fi adapter and. You’re connected.

Cisco Connect is a organized app that will assist you add devices to the network and once the router is app and running most devices will add themselves once you supply the password let for restricted ‘guest’ access on a separate network, set parental controls, test your Internet connection speed and directly manage your router if you have to split your network for better performance, configure DNS and DHCP, advanced wireless settings, security, manage the attached disk if you have one, set access policies and so forth.

It gets as sophisticated as you need it to be and the good news is that both Cisco Connect and the router’s Web interface are are organized and are supported by a well written and quite in depth manual. I’ll post the link to the downloadable PDF as a comment to this review.

My basic setup finished in a couple of minutes and it took a couple of minutes more to register individual devices: laptops, desktops, printers, movable gaming devices, home servers, Internet radio. Anything that has a wired connection (4 10/100/1000 Mpbs ports are available) doesn’t need any setup. The more sophisticated tasks, like reserving IP addresses for printers and a media hub and ‘splitting’ the traffic into two individually named networks mapping into the router’s two frequency bands (2.4 MHz and five MHz) were equally easy and covered by the manual.

It’s vital that Cisco Connect is installed on one of your computers if not on all because the 1st thing it does when you start it’s checking the router’s position and attempting to fix whatever problems if it detects any. To get ‘the latest’ I installed it from Cisco’s site and I did not experience any issues throughout or after the install finished.

PERFORMANCE AND RANGE (4 of 5)

Depending on your clients, the router can supply as much as two x 300 Gbps this was a big improvement over the 802.11g router it is replacing. This is many considering that the best I’m to get from my ISP is 15 Mbps downstream and two Mbps upstream but today’s home networks have many of interior traffic if you use NAS devices, media servers or home servers that are set to run backups.

While the router supports 802.11 a/b/g/n the manual warns that best performance may be achieved when all clients support 802.11n and that one single 802.11a client can slow the complete network if present.

In practice I got consistent 150 Mbps on the five GHz band while in the same room at about 30 ft. From the router (except for some minutes each day when the five GHz signal drops for no obvious reason see the posted screenshots). With one floor in between, 90 Mbps was possible but the five GHz band was not as dependable or I could get a steady stream of 54 Mbps, on occasion better on the 2.4 GHz band. With two floors in between (router in the basement and my computer on the second floor and at the other end of the house, many 70 80 ft. Away) the five MHz band became practically unusable (I will post many inSSIDer shots) and the 2.4 GHz band could get me 6 24 Mbps, still okay for Web browsing. The computers on the second floor right above the router get a steady 50 70 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band.

I could like be aware of that, while the router broadcasting on two bands does have its benefits the five GHz signal works best when you have line of sight to the router or one thin wall/floor in between. It is not as good at passing through walls as the 2.4 GHz signal. It’s possible to maximize performance by using a mix of wired plus two segregated bands but many testing and good planning is obliged.

RELIABILITY (4.5 of 5)

The E3200 was remarkably stable so far if I do not think about the random signal loss on the five GHz frequency on the second floor. It is just to state that, when the default settings are kept, the router will automatically switch between 2.4 GHz and five GHz and between the available channels on each band to maximize performance and minimize interference. Since I do not have neighbors, I can not say how the router could perform in a more crowded environment.

Due to some violent storms, we lost power for seconds at a time some number of times in the past not many days. Whenever that happened, the router came back on own and I was able to resume work without having to reestablish a VPN connection or the chat session on WebEx with a Cisco support rep.

EXTRA FEATURES (4.5 of 5)

The E3200 is chuck full of advanced features as well as strong security and encryption and the capability to optimize it for gaming (not tested yet) and, of course, the most observable being the USB port through which you may be able to share files off an attached disk with control over access level on the local network and over the Internet.

On my features wish list. I wish it was possible to really control the signal strength because the five GHz band is obviously underpowered. As well, while it’s possible to remotely reboot the router, it could have been nice if a physical ‘off’ switch was available.

WARRANTY AND SUPPORT (2 of 5)

There is a one year more or less standard restricted warranty. The full terms are posted at Cisco’s site so I am not going to go into details. My experience with routers and this is my fourth or fifth wireless is that, if they work, they last forever.

The support. I can not say that I had a happy experience. Before I Googled for ’5 GHz signal strength’ I thought I’d ask a Cisco support person about it over a chat session. I also wanted to ask about the on and off loss of connection over the five GHz band. What followed was a long, clean and at times absurd 58 minute chat session (Cisco did email me the time stamped transcript) with an offshore person struggling with a script and asking me to do meaningless actions instead of telling me that ‘yes, the five GHz signal is weaker’. Sooner or later she did say that ‘yes, the five GHz signal is weaker’ but only after I asked the question some number of times. As for the sporadic connection drop, I got the standard ‘install the new firmware update’ though she knew that I had the new firmware variant for the router (one of the 1st things she asked) and she knew that the router was set to automatically download and install firmware updates.

I believe that my chat was part of the initial 90 day live free support that Cisco gives. Also, of course, there are posted FAQs and discussion boards. Cisco also offers many ‘paid’ support but they do not say if it is coming from offshore underpaid workers or from technicians who can really help crack problems. My view is that the manual is so well written and the quality of the router is so high, not much support should be needed.

MY RATING

The quality of human support and the over hyping/marketing of the dual band capability (nice to have but not a quantum leap into super high performance) are dragging down my ranking into the four star territory. By the way, four stars means ‘I like it’ but not ‘I love it’. Fact is, I nearly love it because this is a good product but. Not perfect.

This may not be the best n router out there Cisco does sell a higher model for some dollars more but I suspect it is all the way there at the top. I can not see how you may be able to go wrong with this one.

____________________________________________________

TIME CHECK: four MONTHS SINCE INSTALLATION

End of September: four months of nearly flawless operation proved that the E3200 is stable and reliable and its operation comes close to ‘zero maintenance’. I have not rebooted the router in weeks and all is well.

>> Brush your teeth, it is the law! <<

If you only knew the troubles I had with the E3000 and E4000, trying the better firmware variants offered by DD WRT. Constant lock up’s and disconnects. I was about to throw in the towel with Linksys. Then, I tried the E3200. Easy setup, the Access Controls seem right for the 1st time in Linksys history, and it handles a heavy workload of video streaming and data. We saturate our 60meg internet connection from various resources and NO PROBLEMS. Range is great. , I am wanting to give Linksys a thumbs up (FOR NOW) on this router. Best available.

The router performance is good and I am happy with the speed/bandwidth in comparison to my older Linksys wireless N router. But, the USB drive connectivity for file sharing/backup has it is limitation. I have a three TB harddisk, but the router detects only 750 GB of the space. Chat with buyer service confirmed that they haven’t tested this router for three TB capacity drive. It appears to be a limitation now. Possibly, a firmware upgrade may fix this in future. But, as of now, my ranking stays at three stars for false/incomplete advertisement about the Product.

I could say the E4200 router gives a hard connection, about the same throughput performance as the NETGEAR N750 450 Mbps Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 (another 450 Mbps router), easy setup with Cisco Connect’, and the lack of LED lights in the front of the router really helps with the light pollution on the office desk.

Pros:
Supports three data stream (450 Mbps) on the five GHz band. The tested throughput on the five GHz band was 129 Mbps up and 148 Mbps down (laptop with Intel 6300 wifi card to a server with a wired connection). About 15 faster then my old WNDR3700 router, but I hoped for a 50 increase (300 Mbps > 450 Mbps).
Easy to setup with the Cisco Connect’ application. The application guides you in setting up the wireless security, parental control, and guest network.
No issues connecting to the router with my PS3, Windows Home Server, Vulkano, and iPad

Con:
Only two data stream (300 Mbps) on the 2.4 GHz band. The tested throughput on the 2.4 GHz band was 60 Mbps up and 70 Mbps down
No extra features like WDS repeating/bridge
WNDR4000 has better parental control features

Summary:
Having the E4200 and WNDR4000, the E4200 has about the same throughput performance as the WNDR4000 (134 Mbps up and 140 Mbps down on the five GHz band). The difference between the two comes down to features. The E4200 has a great setup utility that will let any newbie to configure the router with ease. The WNDR4000 gives more useful features like WDS repeating and traffic meter. As for the range of the router, I really can not comment on it caused by living in a small apartment.

Some extra background info:
One thing that I feel is missing in the router comparison table’ is the processor speed. The CPU speed gives you an idea about the performance of the router. So here is what I found on the internet.
E1200 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 4MB Flash
E1500 300 MHz CPU with 32MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E2500 300 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E3000 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 8MB Flash
E4200 480 MHz CPU with 64MB RAM and 16MB Flash

(Review updated 06/20/11 to add details about firmware variant 1.0.02 and USB printer support with the E4200 router. See the end of the review for that update.)

I networked my home long before wireless routers were available (or affordable) for home users, using Ethernet back then and moving to wireless once it was available for home use. During the years, I have nearly generally used Linksys routers, and the not many times I have tried other brands, I was soon sorry and switched back to Linksys. I will not say I have generally had perfect experiences with this maker, but my in general experience with them was good enough to position Linksys as a name I trust.

When I saw the feature set for the new Cisco Linksys E4200 router, I was more than intrigued, especially by the dual band feature and the possible speeds it boasts.

As it turns out, only one of the wireless adapters I already owned supported the five GHz band, and it was the interior NIC on one of my computers. To completely test the Linksys E4200, I bought one Cisco Linksys AE1000 High Performance Wireless N Adapter and connected it to each of my computers to test it with the new router.

The dual band feature by default uses the same SSID for both the 2.4 GHz band and the five GHz band. This lets a wireless adapter to seamlessly connect to whichever of those bands it can, but does not help if you want to push certain wireless devices to connect using the five GHz band, which is possibly faster. Luckily, you may be able to manually name the two wireless bands with different SSIDs, and simply connect your devices that support five GHz bands to the SSID for that band.

Before I progress, I should state that I live in a three story townhouse, and I placed the router as centrally as possible, in the den on the second floor. I use the den as my office, and I have a good spot for wireless routers that has no reflective surfaces near it, nor any other things that may get in the way with the wireless signal.

The living room is just down the hall from the den, and there aren’t doors in between the two rooms. I get a great signal using the five GHz band when I’m anywhere on the second floor, if using my laptop’s interior wireless adapter or the AE1000 USB adapter that I bought. I connected the AE1000 on my desktop PC, my laptop, and my netbook and each enjoys speeds of 300 Mbps when using the five GHz band on the second floor. But, when I use the five GHz band with the same laptop and netbook and the same wireless adapters on the 3rd floor, the signal is weak and the speeds jump wildly from 13.5 Mbps to 300 Mbps, with the 300 Mbps being a rarity upstairs.

Conversely, when I connect to the E4200 router using its 2.4 GHz band, the signal is strong on every floor and in every room and the speed is stable rather than erratic. I find that the 2.4 GHz band connects my devices with speeds on par with my older wireless routers 65 Mbps to 130 Mbps, based on which wireless adapter I use.

The configuration itself is easy and users who run the setup disk to configure it’ll find themselves with a basic, usually secure network. There are many things I do not like about the Cisco Connect software that runs the setup, but I will get to that a bit afterward.

For more experienced users with more advanced needs, the advanced configuration is where you will use up more of your time, if not all. This is where you may be able to set extra levels of security, name the two wireless networks and the guest network with different SSIDs, manage connected storage devices, and more.

I favor to not rely on only WPA encryption for my wireless security. Also, I employ MAC address filtering, do not broadcast my SSID, and I bound the number of DHCP connections to the number of devices I have to use on my network. For those who do not know, a MAC address is the distinctive identifier for a network device. Every network device has one, and no two devices use the same MAC address. I set the filtering to only let devices with a MAC address I have exactly allowed to connect. If someone were to break the code on my wireless connection, they could have to have a MAC address that’s allowed on my network. Over that, since I do not broadcast my SSID, nobody can see it, if they’re in range. You must know the name of my SSID to manually configure it, or you have to can access the router to use the Wi Fi Protected Setup button. You may also use the Easy Setup Key if you decide to create one, but we will get to that a bit afterward.

I have some devices that I on a regular basis connect to my network, many wired, many wireless. All were easy to configure and connect. Many I connected using the Wi Fi Protected Setup button, others using the Easy Setup Key, and still others I connected by manually entering the wireless network info. These devices include: two TiVo Premieres with Wireless N adapters, TiVo Series two with a Wireless G adapter, desktop PC with an Ethernet port and a wireless NIC, a laptop computer also with both Ethernet and wireless, a netbook PC also with both Ethernet and wireless, a NAS device connected via Ethernet, a wireless printer, a Windows Mobile 6.5 Smartphone with wireless, and an Ooma phone router connected with Ethernet.

The router lets you to connect a USB hard drive to it which can then be shared on your network using the management console for the router. You may be able to share folders publicly, or lock down access by creating user accounts for the shares. These folders may be accessed either through standard networking (UNC paths or mapped network drives) or they may be accessed via FTP. The router does function well inside my network as an FTP server, but as Comcast blocked FTP ports from my Comcast modem, I can not access the FTP server from outside my own network.
However, I can access the governance console from outside my network if I enable the Remote Management feature, and using the DDNS feature, you may be able to easily access this from anywhere. I decide to leave this disabled, but did turn it on long enough to test it.

I should most likely explain the DDNS feature also. This feature communicates with one of two services (DYNDNSthe or TZO.Com) and on a regular basis updates your external IP address given to you by your ISP. As most internet service providers use dynamic IP addresses for residential accounts, your IP address could possibly change each day. By registering with one of the two supported services and configuring your E4200 router to keep your IP address updated with those services, you have a static internet address you may be able to use to access your router’s Remote Management feature, or FTP server (should your ISP not block those ports) when away from your home. This feature works beautifully.

The router has four Ethernet ports on the back, each of which is a Gigabit port. All of the NICs with the Gigabit capability I connected to it easily used that speed. This is great when you’re moving files between machines inside your network, but will not increase your internet speed, as most residential providers do not have plans anywhere near that fast.

Although I’m usually happy with the E4200 router, the area I have significant disappointment in is the Cisco Connect software. While it’s a great tool for easy configuration particularly for novice users it has restrictions that prove frustrating for more experienced users. For one, if you want to use the Cisco Connect software, the password for the admin login must be the same as the password for the wireless network. I personally don’t want these two passwords to be the same. I may not have an issue giving a friend the password to connect to my network, but I certainly don’t want anybody but me to have the admin password where they may change settings.

Another issue I have with it’s that you can not install the Cisco Connect software on other PCs and connect it to your router unless you make an Easy Setup Key. The Easy Setup Key is a USB flash drive which you supply and the Cisco Connect setup installs it with the software for extra computers. Sounds innocent enough, but this USB flash drive may also be used to connect new wireless devices to your wireless network. Not only that, but it stores the admin password for the router in the key so that anybody who gets their hands on this flash drive can get into your network and the administrator settings for your router. For me, this is a big security liability and I just do not like it.

One feature I do really like in the Cisco Connect software is the capability to test your internet speed directly on the router. This is very useful when you’re experiencing slowness with internet speeds and you want to swiftly test the speed of the internet modem before the signal is spread out to the other devices on your network. This is a feature that was a long time coming, and is much appreciated. Where I’m disappointed here is that the speed test feature is only available in the Cisco Connect software and not in the advanced configuration control panel. One other vital thing be aware of, this speed test doesn’t suffice if you’re trying to find out if an internet speed problem is being caused by your router. For that, you still have to disconnect the router from your modem and connect your computer straight to your internet modem to test speed.

At the time I wrote this review, Amazon’s page for the E4200 router states that it’ll have the capability to connect a USB printer and share it on your network sometime in the summer of 2011. I called Cisco Linksys support to learn if there was an ETA on this feature. As indicated by Cisco Linksys support, this feature isn’t planned for this router. This is a big.

After having owned many single band routers, it was time to upgrade to a dual band model.

I 1st tried the Netgear 3700. After using it for about a week, I returned it because of poor transmission speeds and messy firmware.
Thankfully that week, the E4200 has been released. As with other linksys routers, installation was a breeze. I use more than 15 networked things in my house. Using the included software to do the setup is simple and straight forward. Linksys really got it right with this model.
This router is super fast in comparison to the netgear 3700. The NAS input for a USB storage devices is about ten times as fast and the 5ghz band works better in my house on the E4200 than on the 3700.
Range on the 2.4ghz band is great. I can pick up signal on my laptop two houses over. It’s nice when you’re at a neighbors house and are able to use your internet connection at a decent signal strength.
The 5gz band isn’t quite as strong but I was still able to pick it up one house over. For me, as long as I can sit poolside in the far back part of my yard and get a strong signal, that’s all that matters.
I recommend this router to anybody who is wanting to get the most up to date technology in a beautiful package.

Only negative for me is the price point. I think we all have to suffer because of Cisco’s big margin prerequisites..
