MXL condenser microphones use what is known as a cardioid pickup pattern, which is more sensitive to sound waves arriving at the front of the microphone as opposed to those arriving from the sides or rear. Unlike other MXL® models, this microphone benefits from being a USB (Universal Serial Bus) devicemeaning this is a plug and play microphone that will interface with Windows and Macintosh computers without the need for any special drivers. As a USB device, it carries the added benefit of not requiring an external microphone preamp, as is the case with most condenser microphones. Unlike microphones designed for live performance or lesser dynamic model microphones, this instrument requires careful handling.

December 10, 2009 This review is from: MXL Studio1USB USB Desktop Recording Kit (Electronics) This microphone is as described, and I highly recommend it for the homestudio enthusiast. It was completely “plug & play” on my XP laptop and I was recording immediately with no hangups or need for extra hardware drivers. The mic picks up high and low frequencies nicely, but I recommend buying a windscreen to cut down on “P pops.” The carrying case is durable and the foam inlay protects all the components in seperate compartments. I’d read good editorial reviews about it on other sites, but neglected to read the user reviews here on Amazon the latency issue with the headphone jack would have been a dealbreaker for me. The sound quality of the mic itself is nice for the price, but I found there was a background hiss possibly due to the inexpensive USB interface; I’ve noticed the same problem with other sub$100 USB interfaces, and suspect they all use the same chip/circuitry. Acceptable for podcasting, interviews, etc. in the field where the builtin USB interface is less cumbersome, but not for serious voice work in a home studio. You will definitely want a shock mount if using a floor mic stand, as it’s very susceptible to picking up stand thumps.
