Great sound but many minor quibbles, July 8, 2011

I bought the HT SS380 at the store after realizing that the HT SS370 had been discontinued. I expected that since the systems shared a common look and nomenclature that they could have the same features (with the added 3 D functionality in the HT SS380). I was wrong.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE HT SS370 AND HT SS380 SYSTEMS:
While the HT SS380 does have 3 D potential, many other notable features are missing. The HT SS370 had alternatives for buying extra parts to add wireless rear speaker capability. The HT SS380 has no wireless expandability alternatives. The HT SS370 speakers came with wiring that shown proprietary connectors on one end for connecting to the receiver, but the speakers themselves shown standard wire clips, making them available to use with any other system that shown a regular clip design. The HT SS380 speakers, on the other hand, still feature the proprietary clips on one end, but the other end is firmly connected to the speaker and isn’t able to be removed. So to use the speakers with any other system, the wires could must be cut and spliced to extra wire. The HT SS380 does but contain a iPod/iPhone dock, whereas that part had to be bought individually for the HT SS370.

PROS:
The HT SS380 has great sound for a minimal price. The speakers are plenty deafening when it comes to filling a moderate size room with crisp sound, and the passive sub woofer puts out bass that you may feel. Sound quality is one of the most vital parts of the system for me, and so that is why I applied a 4 star ranking instead of a 3 star ranking. The system as a whole is sleek and stylish. The included tuning microphone does a great job of setting up the speakers for best sound, though I ended up making tweaks and modifications to match my preferences. The system holds four HDMI connections and features BRAVIA sync (cooperation between Sony devices like a Sony TV or PS3).

CONS:
The LCD on the front of the receiver is small and there are elements that are practically unreadable unless you’re mere inches from the screen. There aren’t composite connections on the receiver, so hooking up older, non HDMI devices (like the Nintendo Wii) is hard (you could have to buy a Wii composite cable or a third party Wii2HDMI connector). The tuning microphone should plug into the front of the system someplace since once the system is tucked into a media cabinet, it becomes hard to pull it out and re attach the tuning microphone if you want to run the diagnostic again. And the aforementioned proprietary speaker wires are not a deal breaker, but it could have been nice if Sony had allowed their speakers greater versatility.

Not bad for price. Beware speaker connectors are proprietary and the lengths included aren’t exactly generous, especially for rear surround. Good luck finding extensions from Sony tried without success. I think it’s 18 gauge but Sony support couldn’t confirm gauge but it’s pretty darn thin and btw, the speakers are a bit on the cheap (1000 watts will not do you much good with cheap speakers) so you’re primarily paying for the receiver.

during the years I have not been a big fan of Sony merchandise as they have generally been overpriced compared to other businesses that offer the same merchandise with more features at a lower price. But after purchasing a refurb Sony 46″ Bravia and this home theater system, I think my eyes have been opened!

Now sure the things are a bit on the costly side, but how surprisingly well they “play nice” together is worth it (just like Apple products).

The sound is great and the Bravia Sync is AMAZING as you just plug in the HDMI cables and it is totally set up with the TV recognizing that you will be using the sound system for sound instead of the TV speakers with many more beyond that!

Even when it comes to my PS3 it rocks as both the TV & Sound system remotes work with the PS3′s DVD/Blu Ray playing functions, so it eliminated the need for me to purchase a seperate Harmony remote part just to get it to work (I may sell my Harmony remote all together the Sony remotes work so well).

All in all, if your looking for a good lower end priced home theater system with many great features, I’d think you could happy with the HT SS380!

Many use powered “active shutter” glasses, others polarized “passive” glasses. You will need one pair per viewer, and they will must be matched with your display, if they are the same brand, or a pair of “universal” glasses intended to work across brands. HDMI Cable
To connect your source (such as a 3D Blu ray Disc player) to your display, you will need a high speed HDMI cable. Cables with this designation feature bandwidth speeds up to 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second), for carrying the 3D signal without any loss of quality.
If you want to get more info about 3D, shop our 3D merchandise, watch videos, or interact with other customers, we invite you to visit 3D 101, our buyer center about everything 3D.

I got this system in March after pre ordering it. I have had last good luck with Panasonic home theater systems so I waited purchasing an upgrade till this has been released this year. And I am happy I did. What a great product. I have had it for two weeks now and I am really impressed with this system. I do not have a 3D TV, I only use this system for Bluray discs. You don’t have to own a 3D TV to use this as a bluray system.

I’ve shopped around for other home theater systems for a long time. I have gone to many electronics stores, Fry’s, Best purchase, Target, but I wasn’t impressed with any of the other brands out there. Sony, Samsung, LG, I really believe this Panasonic system beats them all by quality, sound, picture, and features.

Likes:

Viera Cast: fitted prepared to go WiFi for streaming netflix, vudu, and many other services. This thing will also do Skype!

Down firing subwoofer: Panasonic changed the subwoofer so it fires the bass into your floor, creating a theater like boom and experience. And let me tell you, this subwoofer really rumbles my condo. The bass is deep, no distortion whatsoever when I have cranked this system really deafening. I am really impressed with the design of the subwoofer. If you want to watch movies silently or crank it up throughout an action packed movie, the bass made by this system is totally jaw dropping.

Cinema Surround Sound The theater surround sound feature you may be able to turn on really increases the surround effect of movies, making this 5.1 system sound like a 7.1 system. I recommend turning the rear surround speakers up, you may be able to customize every speaker and how deafening you want them to be. You may be able to increase the bass output. The surround sound made is clear, crisp, sounds excellent, and throughout actions scenes you do not realize that it is the superb surround experience making your heart pound, not the movie.

2 HDMI Inputs & Optical In: The SC BTT370 lets you to connect your xbox or ps3 or whatever has an HDMI source straight to the unit, so you do not have a ton of fussing and forgetting which system is hooked straight to your TV and what setting you’re supposed to be on. I have my xbox directly connected to the surround sound system and it works flawlessly.

Picture: The deep color and full 1080p picture renders beautifully. I’m breathless when watching bluray movies on this system. The Netflix and VUDU streaming services are integrated nicely, and look stunning also. I watched U 571 and Blawhawk Down last night, and I still could not believe how clear and beautiful the picture was.

3D Discs: I don’t have a 3D TV, and you don’t need a 3D TV to use this player. I talked to many people who bought this system, and they rave about the 3D potential and I believe it. They told me this play blows the PS3 out of the water by 3D generating and detail.

Dislikes: None

1st the positive:

The sound that comes out of this little unit is amazing. The small size is just unbelievable, and the unit never gets hot. I has been worried because this unit doesn’t have a powered subwoofer, but the bass is deafening and leaves me impressed and not wanting more. As well, the speaker grills are metal and lasting (not cloth covers, like on last models). I love the Vieracast internet available content. With my fast internet connection, the movies from Vudu load instantly and look nearly better than my live FIOS HD picture. I also love the German news Vieracast app, I just wish they had more apps on the unit. The FM radio is better than projected.

But there are many pretty annoying negatives:

The problem with this unit is the software. Though the GUI looks pretty, it has many serious restrictions. Last Panasonic units could remember what input you were last using when you turned them off, and the next time you turned them on could already be switched to that input. On this unit, but, that doesn’t happen. I only use this unit to watch my cable’s STB which is plugged into the unit’s HDMI 1 input. But, EVERY TIME I turn the unit on, it goes back to the default HOME screen (where you have to graphically decide what you could input you could like to use) rather than going directly to the HDMI 1 input. This extra and needless step stops me from just using my one cable tv remote to turn on my TV, my STB, and this unit. I can use that other remote to turn this unit on, but I STILL have to use the remote that came with this unit to navigate away from the HOME screen and tell it to switch to HDMI 1. This is very annoying and it really doesn’t seem right why Panasonic made this change from last year’s model.

Another annoying software problem is that it takes FOREVER to switch to the HDMI inputs. I do not know what the unit is doing while it it switching to the HDMI input (analyzing, thinking, whatever), but it takes about 5 7 seconds before my STB’s image appears on the connected TV. This is in direct contrast to switching inputs on my Panasonic TV, where switching HDMI inputs is nearly instant.

So, the big negative is that it takes about 20 seconds to turn on the unit, grab the remote, navigate away from the HOME screen to the HDMI input, , then wait, wait, wait, till it activates the input and really puts a picture out on the connected TV. For me, this is way too long, particularly if I just want to fire the unit up real fast to watch many fast news throughout lunch.

I am considering returning this unit for this reason, though the excellent price and the excellent sound it puts out makes my choice hard.

If you are not a time conscious person, maybe the unit’s slooooow input switching won’t annoy you. Or the fact that you have to go through the HOME menu EVERY time you turn the unit on. In that case, this will be a great unit for you. You will love the sound you will get out if it!

We just bought this as our 1st home theater system and so far the sound quality was excellent. We also enjoy the apps included (mainly the Pandora app) to listen to music.

Set up was pretty simple, though the basic information don’t include information for connecting a DVR/set top cable box/etc. And that requires many extra steps and another HDMi or optical cable to make all the connections.

But there are some number of things that are really disappointing to me. Though there’s a USB port, it doesn’t seem to recognize any USB devices I attached (two WD external hard drives and a Philips MP3 player).According to their online tech support the USB port “is only for a wireless LAN adaptor. It isn’t for connecting anything else.” This is weird, because this system is already wireless.

This system does does have an SD card slot, but the tech support indicates that it only supports four file types: MPEG2, AVCHD, JPEG and MPO. That means that the SD card reader won’t play MOV, MP4, MP3, AVI, RM or any of the other common multimedia file types. So far, this system was unable to recognize any of the three SD cards I tried to use. I think they have to be “formatted” 1st. So much for plug and play; you won’t be able to take the SD card from your camcorder and plug it in to watch your movies.

I know everyone so far rated this system really high because Bose is the best selling audio brand in the country but read on and I urge you to do your research and judge for yourself. I bought this system, against my better judgement, some months back caused by a friend of mine raving about it. I went to my local Bose store and heard it and it sounded great in their little room. I fell for this trick once before some number of years ago when I bought the original Bose 321 system and hated it. So nevertheless i ended up to get the V35 system for $3k. I took it home and set it up and it didn’t sound anything like it did in the store. I took it back and got a new one and BAM, same thing so I called the store and they had a man come out and “professionally install it.” The man did a great job and was honest about the product. After it was completely configured it sounded better but not like a $3k system should sound. The sound it put out was either boomy or too rich so in other words it lacked midrange and true punch for movies. As an example when at mid to high volume, the surround sound comming from the center channel overpowered the dialogue like hearing to much street noize in a city sceen and not being able to hear the voice crystal obviously. We fooled with it for some number of hours to no avail. It either got much quiter in which the base answer overpowered the audio or it got two deafening where all the sound seemed to mix so where it lacked clearness. Honestly my old Onkyo 7.1 THX system I bought for $799 sounded WAY better than the V35 Bose system that replaced it (replacing the onkyo system because the receiver died and I wanted to go all out). After talking to the installer he told me that Bose systems generally sound good in the store because the rooms they’re set up in are perfectly rectangular with nothing in the way to block sound waves meaning these rooms are configured so that the sound waves will bounce of the walls perfectly. Just, its a nice trick for a perfectly square, small room but not practical for most lived in living rooms. So I kept the system another week and moved it to a 14×14 bedroom and bam he was right. The system sounded much better but still lacked true midrange but in general the sound was much better but still not worth 3k I believe. The room which I needed a system in is a 20×22 room so it’s more of a challenge for the small sounding V35. So needless to say I took it back. So again I believe the sound wasn’t good enough for that price tag but in its environment you may be able to get a decent sound. There are but many plus’s for the V35 system. 1st, it’s easy to set up and its an all in one system which helps many people who dont care to purchase seperate parts and build their own system. The speaker size made the system virtually invisible but that’s also why it sounds so small. Nevertheless I took the system back and had no problem to get my money back. I then did about a months worth of research/searching and for the same price built an amazing system. I can not stress how much better it’s when you put a little effort and time into doing this. I’m not an audiophile but when I watch an action movie i want to be able to obviously hear the dialogue while hearing the surround effects while to get punched in the face by the subwoofer. The Bose simply did not do it for me. I ended up to get a mixed system which consists of a best Technology CLR 2500 center, (2) BP7002′s towers, (2)Klipsch RF 42 surrounds, an Epik Empire subwoofer, twelve guage wire and banana plugs from monoprice and a Pioneer Elite SC 35 receiver. Total cost for parts. $3100. A mere $100 more than I paid for the Bose but if you factor in tax from the Bose store, my system costs less. Again you must shop around and look for the best price so there’s the trade for a boxed home system like bose. If you do not shop around that same configuration I quoted will cost you around 5k but it may be had in non holiday/non football seasons for half the price. After setting up my new system I watched Pirates of the Carribean , then Blackhawk Down. When I walked out after the movies had finished I had two black eyes and was sore everywhere because the sub punched so hard but never for a minute did the best technology and Klipsch speakers feel as if they were overpowered. I cant stress enough how good the Klipsch, and best technology speakers are. If your on the fence, jump. You wont be sorry. These speakers have great lows, mids and highs and create a room full of quality sound. The Empire sub is by far the best sub I had ever heard. It kicks so hard that it may most likely power a real theaters low end. If you do not believe me, get on AVS Forums and do many research. Anyway. If this price is too much for you I also recommend the KEF3005 speaker system (which was my second choice if I had not configured my own system). I heard that system at a friends place and it sounds amazing when paired to his Denon AVR1911 receiver. Nevertheless my point is that you really have to do your research and not purchase into mass marketed, overpriced junk. Again just my opinion. Good luck and turn the volume up!

After two years of research, many many visits to the local Bose store, lots of questions asked, we took the plunge with the new model and enjoyed a 10 sale that has been offered at the time! We were wanting to replace our current home theatre system with the big Kiplisch speakers (one of the major reasons for the search and hence has been attracted to the jewel boxes) and we looked for a substitute that was more suiting an apartment space. Addtional extra was the remote ended up operating more like a harmony, which wasn’t what we had orginally thought (we remain a harmony run family, with this one exception). All hooked up to the receiver include the TV, tivo, xbox, apple tv, and play station.

We love the thin line look of the receiver and without all the big speakers in the room, we feel we gained back many of space. The receiver has inputs/outputs that really reflects the current modern day demands and entertainment devices. The speakers are amazing: the centre one offers the best sound by hearing speach in any genre and we aren’t raising the volume to hear the talking part of a program , then having to turn down the volume when all the sound effects come into play!

The set up takes a while, for my husband who is a technical nerd, but that maybe because of all the extra devices we had to program the remote to learn. The sound testing system is cool and I’m sure that’s why we’re so enjoying the surround sound effects and the clearness of the voices is beautiful. The speakers bring music to life seriously. We played so many genre and every one just echoed with such depth that you could have thought you were in the recording studio. We were impressed with the integration of the receiver with the speakers and the sound testing that came with the set up.

One thing be aware of, we opted to have wireless back speakers which obliged extra hardware to be bought. The sound quality is a tad better with the back speakers wired; but we opted for wireless and we’ll most likely end up not noticing in the long run!

The remote was a dream and it did take a little time to learn the language of all our devices. We thought we could not use the infra red wireless headphones with it well you can! The cord has be be jacked in the front panel of the receiver and you must turn up the volume to hear.

Like everyone, we were also aware of the high costs, but when you break it down, tangible and tangible benefits do out weigh the ‘cost number’. For those of you who need a cleaner look and good sound quality (loves movies and many genre of music: I’m trying to distinguish from those who have ears that pick up a whole lot more than the average population and are fussy about what they listen to): this being said, it’s really worth a look and a serious investigation at this new Bose Model.

This product wasn’t bought on a whim and we had many of high demands and prerequisites, particularly where the hamrony like features and the wireless headphones were concerned! Seriously, we held back from purchasing the model earlier as we were still investigating on if the Harmony may be trained for the Bose system: we were impressed with the Bose remote!

We have had the system for over a week now and we cant stop pinching ourselves on the recent buy and wonder why we had waited so long.

Bought this for two regions in the house. After much argument and debate with different neighbors, listening to the different sound systems around, pricing out individual parts, etc.

We went with the Bose V35 for some number of reasons:

1. Great sound.
2. Easy setup/use.
3. Easy to tweak settings.
4. Small and unobtrusive.

In terms of the constant comments pro/con about Bose in respect to its sound quality/price point:

My wife is a professionally trained singer, in the classical mode. We strongly felt that the Bose gives you the best recreation of the concert hall experience. Having listened to Def Tech, Klipsch, Polk, etc. The Bose does a better job. If music is one of your reasons, particularly classical, then we think you’ll be hard pressed to defeat Bose. Music is vital to us, and we have a large range of tastes, but classical/sacred is at or near the top of the list, so this moved Bose up for us. The highs and mids are very crisp and defined. The bass sounds good also. For classical music particularly, you’re going to hear more treble/midrange than chest/house thumping bass. There are other types of music that emphasize bass more, that a mega subwoofer could be better for. For pop music and many movies, we simply turn up the bass and it still sounds great.

Movies/TV sound great also. We watched Crimson Tide (wide range of sound.) I heard sounds on it I didn’t realize were in the soundtrack. A vast improvement over our previous system. Star Trek and Band of Brothers sounds great also. Have not watched Black Hawk Down still. But I’m looking forward to it.

As far as Price goes. It’s pricey. But, my neighbor spent about three times what we spent on his sound, and his is still not working well. Maybe his will sound better, but it does not still. Many people like to talk about the size of their speakers. I have never felt the need for that, personally.

We found the Bose to be priced inside reason for a custom configured system. It’s costly than the HTIB, but it sounds much better, in our opinion.

Finally, if your needs is to have a big system with big speakers and bass that shakes the neighborhood, this system isn’t for you. By crisp/clear remaining sound, easy to use, minimal footprint in your living space, I can not think of a better alternative.
