I owned five Powershot S Series (s30,s50,s60,s80,s90) cameras previous to buying the s100. I took close to 100,000 photos with my s90 in the two years that I owned it. I’m a semi professional photographer that owns many Canon EOS DSLR cameras with L lenses.

First off, I do not think it is just to compare the s100 to DSLRs, APS C, Four Thirds cameras. These big sensor cameras are in another class and my really old Canon 10D with 6MPs will at low ISO have better image quality than the s100. If you do not mind a bigger camera that isn’t pocketable and are wanting to use up more, the s100 isn’t the best camera for you. As an example, the Sony NEX 5N will give superior results to the s100 in almost all situations.

The s90, s95 and now s100 are all distinctive in that the are really pocketable all the competitors are too big for pant pockets (Panasonic LX5, Olympus XZ 1, FujiFilm X10). Many of these cameras are quite good and all of them supply faster lenses across the zoom range (the s100′s size precludes a faster zoom lens). But none of these competitors are comfortably pocketable this means that the s100 has practically no competition for it is size as a truely pocketable semi pro camera.

If you do not need the manual control, the Canon 300HS will also take great pictures for less than half the price in a smaller/slimmer camera body. The s100 has a great AUTO mode and many Scene modes which in most situations does an excellent job. But shooting both the s100 and 300HS in AUTO will lead to alike results. The s100 differentiates itself by excellent manual control and the capability to shoot RAW pictures.

Now if you’re someone that wants pant pocketable camera with excellent manual controls and image quality, the s100 is hard to defeat. I take ten times more shots with my s100 than my DSLRs because I generally have it with me.

If you already have a s90 or s95, there’s little have to upgrade to the s100 now. The s100 has many respectable upgrades (24mm, GPS, better intended body) but the image quality is near same to the s95/s90. My s90 took many falls and goo in an airplane pocket killed the flash otherwise i’d stay with the s90. I have now taken close to 1500 photos with the s100 and here are my experiences of it is pros and cons:

PROS:
The s100 is cleaner at high ISO (eg 1600 and above) but the difference is not as considerable as Canon claims (for low ISO, there’s no difference in noise)
S100 is slimmer than the s95 which is was already quite pocketable
GPS is a great addition and quite correct most of the time
Rough texture finish is makes the camera easier to hold and also looks great
Rubber grips make camera easier to hold but do not expect miracles
Mirror like shutter button is simpler to find particularly given the elimination of the func button
Back wheel now has the perfect resistance and feedback
The delete button isn’t on the dial so I can delete while looking at a zoomed in image!!!
Lens zooms quickly (sometimes too quickly to get correct zoom)
Fast shutter speed (in fact in uninterrupted drive mode it’s hard to take one photo always get two photos and I’m pretty fast releasing the shutter button an extra slower uninterrupted mode choice could have been helpful)
Eight shots in a second is a useful feature to have though not frequently used
24mm wide angle is useful for indoor photography
Lens is sharper across zoom range than the s90 with sharper corners
Capability to control max ISO and ISO selection requirements for Auto ISO
Dynamic range correction works well
Dedicated movie recording button
1080p video recording (much better than s90&s95 but can not match Sony HX 9V)
Can zoom while recording video with minimal noise

CONS:
All Canons Point&Shoots have slower concentrate particularly in the black. The s100 is comparable or somewhat slower than the s90. Fuji and Sony have made strides to offer faster concentrate and I hope Canon follows. Set shortcut button to Focus lock to pre focus once concentrate locked the s100 is really fast
NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHERS: a big con for me is that the s100 is locked to ISO80 for shutter speeds over 1sec. May not matter to majority of people but I like shooting 15sec ISO400 shots with my s90
The display doesn’t brighten as much in a black room making structure more hard. The s90 shows a grainy bright image in a near black room where the s100′s display is dark
The s100 is better in high ISO short shutter speed situations but the s90 is better for long shutter speed photography
Auto mode is restricted to 1/8 (have to switch to P mode if you do not want to use a flash in a dim room)
HDR requires a tripod because camera doesn’t align pictures (given the tech Canon really should auto align the images).
Battery life somewhat worse than s90 (buy a second battery I had three for my s90)
Fast zoom with steps on occasion makes it hard to get the exact zoom desired
Movies are great in well lit regions but have many less get than the s90 ensuing in hi res but darker movies
Sony’s panoramics are great and Canon is still using same approach as it did in the s30 in 2001!
Generally open flash if it is required before handing the camera to anybody else. Everyone firstly presses down on the flash ensuing in a flash error.
Price but you get what you pay for

At the time of this writing the S100 was just released. I newly bought the S95 on the recommendation of a friend who is an avid photographer, thinking the S100 could not be released till much afterward. The S100 just started showing up in stores so I bought it also, intending to return one of the cameras. So I had the chance to compare them both!

To preface, I am an intermediate level photographer, and it’s just a hobby. I do own a DSLR, but it’s one of the lower end models in the DSLR world. Still, I became comfy with manual modifications and own some lenses for it. But the most of my pictures end up being taken with the camera most conveniently at hand (iPhone), and in this case I looked for something that could offer a big step up in image quality without having to carry the bigger DSLR.

Both the S95 and S100 are excellent cameras. But, there are key points about the S100 that give it the advantage. The rubber grips on the front and back are excellent. The flash pops up on both the S95/S100 where you could naturally place your left hand. Having the rubber grips for your right hand lets this to be a one handed camera, or at least lets better support with the right hand since the left hand may not be able to rest where it feels most natural, which for me tends to involve a finger resting over the flash. This is an issue for both the S95 and S100, but the S100 mitigates it by having better support for the right hand the rubber grips and better shutter button position. More on that next.

The shutter button is bigger on the S100. This feels more natural and easier to access. Also the position of the shutter button was moved more towards the right edge. It may seem small but this is a big improvement. If you have shorter fingers you may find it more hard to naturally reach the shutter button on the S95 than the S100. The shutter button on the S95 is just a bit too far from the right edge for my taste, making it a bit hard to reach when bending your shooting finger to press the button. Canon surely recognized that as evidenced by the new place of the shutter button on the S100.

The buttons on the rear of the camera have been changed, as well as having a single press button to start shooting a video. This is great since most videos for me involve catching fleeting times of my kids in action. On the S95 you have to turn the mode selection dial to movie mode 1st. About video, the S100 also lets zooming in/out while shooting a movie. As I understand it, the S95 didn’t let that.

The processor was upgraded and the S100 does feel somewhat faster because of it when navigating through menus.

I took comparison shots in my home using both cameras and I found a slight advantage for the S100 by image quality. There was a bit more detail using the S100, but honestly it was not important. Still, in my head to head tests the S100 was the winner.

For me the major difference is by the user interface. The button layout is better on the S100 and the addition of the grips is useful. This camera feels easier to shoot because of this. This may seem small, but all of these button layout changes and grip additions add up to a camera that in general is more convenient for me to shoot. That is why I chose the S100. This is, after all, my camera of convenience.

The only downside I found for the S100 is that it’s priced higher than the S95.

If you’re on a budget and tried the S95 and like how it feels, then get it. You’ll be happy with it! The pictures were alike in quality between the two, and the S95 is a high quality camera. Everything about it mechanically boasts of durability and quality. But if the price difference isn’t an issue then I recommend the S100.

This camera, I believe, is not almost as good as the s95. But, it does have its positives, namely its user interface, large angle lens and aesthetics.

A surprising positive for this item, is the user interface, exactly the button layout on the back of the unit. Canon reduced the total number of buttons and moved them around. Shockingly, I now adjusted to the new layout and found it hard to return the unit, usually caused by the buttons’ ease. After years of Canon’s old layout, I’m still amazed that I adjusted in less than a week to the new layout.

The unit includes a rear thumb rest and front grip, joint with a less slick and more textured finish, the unit feels much better in your hand than the s95 ever did.

The s100 features a 24mm lens and the 28mm lens of the s95. That’s a big improvement in large angle shooting and creating more life like scenes.

Unfortunately, that is where the good ends on this camera. For me, the biggest issue is the terrible white balance of this unit. As we all know, a big selling point of this point and shoot, is the ‘bright’ f/2.0 aperture lens. The s95 totally excels in low light shots, creating almost ‘professional’ quality photos. I took a series of low/ambient light shots with both cameras on the same settings, under the same conditions and the results were totally night and day. The shots with the s95 came out bright and light, the s100 shots came out orange and black. With a big modification to the white balance, the s100 shots looked nearly as good as the s95 shots. When viewed on a monitor at 100 the shots lost a big total of clearness and contrast.

Canon ‘upgraded’ the CCD sensor of the s95 to a CMOS sensor. Seemingly they have never heard the phrase ‘if it is not broken, do not fix it.’ as well, if you zoom to 28mm, the aperture goes to f/2.2, which is ‘dimmer’ than the s95 at 28mm.

With these gripes on the side, the s100 is still a hard performer. It just is not an improvement over the s95. The bottom line is that the aesthetic enhancements and large angle lens don’t make up for the white balance/darkness issues when shooting in low/ambient light. Canon, you messed up on this one.

UPDATE 12/4/11 Changed the ranking from four stars to five stars given its price drop and the picture quality relative to its price.

My only real gripe with the T3 is its lack of a rubberized handgrip. I do not expect posh materials at this price point but many surface allowing a better grip could have been nice. One vital point though is that due to materials used, it makes the camera very light weight (although you’ll find with heavier lenses it’ll feel out of balance somewhat). But, in spite of the lack of a rubberized handgrip, you’ll find it hard to dislike this camera. And it I think it gives an in general better and more straight forward shooting experience than thte Nikon D3100.

The controls are pretty straight forward on this camera. And I generally like Canon’s menu system, intuitive. It has lots of auto controls for newbie photographers but of course has a full manual suite of controls so it is perfect for students or people overall who want to learn photography and want a camera they can grow with. By the performance, this DSLR impressed me. In general operation is fast, shot to shot times are decent, and the autofocus is fast. It comes with a nice chunky battery which will give which goes a long time before needing to be charged again.

The viewfinder is 95 coverage and is not the greatest but I found it to be acceptable. And in spite of the comparatively low screen resolution of 230k, I found the screen somewhat viewable in direct sunlight and better than the one on the D3100. Again, it is not great, but not as bad as many I have seen (the worst was the Pentax K x). They have also upgraded the AF system from seven points on the Rebel XS to nine points.

One move that was smart on Canon’s part was to keep the megapixel count at a simple twelve megapixels. This is the ideal camera to use when you plan on using kit lenses entirely and not using costly lenses. This is because Canon’s other pro sumer DSLRs all use the same 18 megapixel sensor. Which is a great thing to have IF you attach many higher end Canon lenses to it. But when those cameras were used with a kit lens, the image quality isn’t as remarkable as one could think due to kit lens have a harder time resolving detail on the 18 megapixel sensors. With the T3, but, I think you may be able to get cleaner pictures with the kit lens than you may be able to with the 60d, T2i, T3i, etc. In general image quality is excellent. Contact is nearly generally on the money, metering is excellent, ISO performance is excellent up to 1600, and colors are correct and punchy without looking cartoonish and oversaturated. The jpegs come out of the camera just a tad soft. But they react well to many in camera sharpening and of course if you shoot in RAW you may be able to change the sharpness to your liking. But in general the T3 may be counted on to deliver great looking pictures in nearly any shooting environment. And that’s worth the 5 star ranking alone.

As far as the movie mode goes, it is only 1280×720 HD but really the video quality is excellent. But, the manual controls are restricted. If you are equal parts into photos and movies, I could think about the Rebel T3i or 60d over this one though, as those have far more broad manual controls for video shooting.

So in general, if you are able to miss the rather cheap plastic construction, this is a formidable entry level DSLR that’s suited for both newbie photographers, and pros looking for a light weight friend to their regular gear.

I think the camera is an amazing purchase for the money. I was able to unpack the contents & begin shooting good pictures now, using the completely auto settings & the included partially charged battery. You’ll but, have to supply an SD Card as this isn’t included, not a small one.

The menu was a LITTLE confusing at 1st, but I quickly got the gist of things and am taking good pictures with the camera. Having used the full auto settings and just dabbling with the advanced settings, I am happy with the buy and I think anybody who is either new to DSLR cameras or who does not want to use up over $1000 for a ‘pro’ or ‘prosumer’ DSLR will also be happy with it right out of the box. Or ANY of the T series cameras .

If you are going to be shooting in RAW (or like I do in RAW+L) I recommend to get AT LEAST a 16GB card, if not a 32GB card. The included battery is a champ. It lasts a good long time & charges quickly. I goed to get a 2nd battery, but I do not think it is needed now as it lasts for some number of hundred shots. The manual says it takes two hrs to charge a completely depleted battery, but the math does not work out that way. The included charger is movable & charges the included 860mAh Li Ion battey at a 580mAh rate, so a full charge should be about 1.5hrs. I will have to time it when I need a full charge & have the spare time to check it every ten mins or so beyond the 1hr mark.

Only some negatives:
When using the completely auto settings indoors the white balance is just a little off, but this is pretty common w/all brands in the entry level range. It can be corrected in photoshop, or with manually picking one of the white balance lighting scenarios (incandescent bulb, fluorescent, or sun) based on your circumstance. My outdoor shots look great on full auto settings.

Having not used an SLR type camera in some years (I’ve never owned a DSLR), I found that the manual it comes with isn’t thorough, and neither is the bigger PDF manual on the included CD. However; it is not Canon’s job to teach you photography so I think the manual is just adequate. The only real trouble I had tryed to figure out how to attach the included eyepiece cover when shooting on a tripod w/studio lighting using auto contact settings. It is not clarified anywhere. You have to slide off the cover that’s there already (the eye cushion) and slide on the cover. Duh! Cripes O Mighty! They explain how to attach the camera strap (like you really have to read that.), but not the eyepiece cover?! Those experienced with SLR photography do not need any more, those totally new are covered by both the instuctions & the quick start guide; but, those in between will not find the information they are looking for here. Get this book: Canon EOS Rebel T3/1100D For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

There’s no memory card included. A tiny one could be appreciated for the totally new user to start shooting now when purchasing the ‘kit’ variant. It can be the first D SLR for the most of it is buyers, but it is most likely not anyone’s first digital camera overall.. so you most likely have one of these lying around already.

A textured grip could be nice, but like the exclusion of the included memory card this is helping to keep the price down on this puppy.

In summary:
Is it a good camera for the $$: Yes, 5/5
Is it a good camera in general: Yes, 4/5 (auto white balance may be better, textured grip could be nice)
Is the ‘kit’ worthwhile: Yes, 4/5 (including a tiny SD Card could be nice for the camera newbie)
Good instructions: Barely, 3/5
Would I purchase it again: YES
Recommend to a friend: YES
Overall rating: 5/5

Bill

I bought this camera some days ago and I have had nothing but FUN with it! on the side from my simple Kodak Easyshare point and shoot, I had a Canon EOS Elan seven (35mm) and had been wanting to switch it over to Digital for some number of years. The longer I waited, the better the camera’s got and more cheap they became.

I decided on the Canon T3 usually due to cheap price. (Nearly 1/2 of the T3i) I felt like I was to get a good value for my money. I was right!

This camera takes amazing photo’s! Clear, crisp, true color.
It’s easy to use, right out of the box.
Fit’s all my old lenses and the remote from the Elan 7
All the advanced manual settings I could want exceeded with the instant gratification of seeing how the settings influence the picture instantly.

This camera lets you to use live screen shooting which so many people like these days and it takes HD video.

The twelve megapixels is plenty when enlarging OVER eleven x 14″.

For a lower end Canon DSLR, it is a big value for the money. This camera is an excellent choice for the hobbiest/enthusiast.

I am SOO happy I bought it!

Nakiska

picking between the T3i, T2i, 60D and 7D, February 27, 2011

The Canon Rebel T3i takes the buyer level dSLR a couple steps closer to the mid level Canon 60D with the addition of the rotating rear LCD screen, remote flash firing, and in camera processing features. The already greatly competent, older Rebel T2i already shared many vital features with the 60D (and features of the semi pro 7D) as well as the 18 MP sensor, 63 zone contact metering system, high ISO performance, HD movie potential, and Digic four image processor. With the new upgrades, it may make it more hard to decide between them. But there are many vital differences.

If you’re considering the Rebel T3i vs T2i, the Rebel T3i is replacing the T2i. Since both cameras share the same 18 megapixel sensor and Digic four processor, both the T2i and T3i will create pictures with exactly the same image quality, produce the same low light/ high ISO performance, shoot at 3.7 frames per second, and have almost the same size and build quality. They’re both offered with the same 18 55mm kit lens (with many minor cosmetic differences on the new T3i kit lens). The T3i is somewhat bigger and heavier caused by the addition of the rotating rear LCD monitor. And that’s one of the biggest differences between the two cameras. Do you want and need a vari angle rear screen or not? The other big difference is the capability of the T3i to remotely control many off camera flashes. Like the 60D and 7D, you may be able to use the fitted flash of the T3i to trigger other Canon Speedlites. Many other minor additions to the T3i include the Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, which is a feature borrowed from point and shoot cameras. When in Auto mode, the T3i will make a motivation of what kind of scene you’re shooting close up, portrait, landscape, etc. And automatically configure the camera settings therefore. But, if you want to use a powerful and costly digital SLR as a point and shoot, you may want to most likely save the money and just purchase a nice, high quality point and shoot like the Canon S95. Other extra but not essential upgrades include the in camera processing Creative Filters, and the capability to decide different image size ratios and to rate your pictures. (Helpful hint: press the Q Button while in image playback and you may be able to access features like ranking, rotating, and Creative Filters.) there’s also a marginally useful Feature Guide which gives brief descriptions of different settings and many extra video features like Video Snapshot, which you may be able to use to shoot short video clips that are automatically joined together into a video, with music.

Canon Rebel T3i and 60D and 7D
Sensor and Image Quality: All three cameras share a alike sensor and 18 megapixels, and so their image quality will be virtually the same. All are able of taking professional quality pictures.

Exposure Metering: The three cameras all share the new 63 zone, dual layer contact metering system and four metering modes. That means they’ll all find out the contact virtually identically and enable you to take properly exposed photos in most every situation, as well as hard back lit scenes. The size of the regions metered for fractional and Spot metering differ somewhat between the cameras, but that is not anything important.

Autofocus: The T3i shares a alike autofocus system to the 60D, with nine concentrate points and three auto focusing modes. But the nine AF points of the 60D are more responsive than those of the T3i: all are cross type in the 60D, only the center is cross type in the T3i. The 60D autofocus system is less complex than the sophisticated AF system of the 7D with its 19 AF point system and its extra Zone, Spot, and Expansion concentrate modes. These different modes address how you want to deal with and group the many AF points. Plus the custom settings of the 7D let one to customize how the AF system works how it tracks subjects, how it deals with objects that come between you and your initial subject, how quickly it responds to these changes of possible subjects that are at different distances from you, etc. But, if you aren’t an avid sports photographer, a wildlife shooter, or someone who understands, needs, and will use the elaborate features of the 7D AF system, then this should not sway you.

Construction: As you may be able to most likely figure out from the prices, each camera isn’t built the same. The T3i has comparatively strong construction of a stainless steel frame with polycarbonate body. The 60D has a stronger and lighter aluminum frame and polycarbonate body, but not as strong as the 7D’s magnesium alloy construction. The 60D also has many total of weather sealing more than the T3i, less than the 7D. But for most users, as well as those using the camera daily or in travel situations, the construction of any of these cameras is far more than good enough, strong enough, and lasting enough.

ISO: Since they all share a alike sensor, the ISO sensitivity and performance at high ISO settings is virtually the same for these three cameras. But do not take my word for it, do not be swayed by pixel peepers on forums, instead check out the camera sensor tests at dxomark to verify this. As you may be able to see, they all share the same in general score, and show alike performance.

Controls: As with construction, the buttons and controls differ with the cameras. Unlike the T3i, the 60D and 7D have almost every control an advanced photographer needs on the outside of the camera and they have the top LCD panel and rear fast Control Dial that aren’t on the T3i. With all the cameras, any controls may also be easily accessed with the Q Button and Q Menu or in the other menus on the rear LCD monitor. The top buttons of the 60D set only one setting each, so this is less complicated than the multiple setting buttons of the 7D. Canon removed the white balance (WB) button on the 60D that the 7D has, but that is not a big deal use the Q Menu. Another change on the 60D is that the Multi controller was moved from the thumb joystick like the 7D and 50D and placed in the center of the rear Quick control dial. This does not change how it functions, and should just be a matter of to get used to the difference. If you plan on using your camera on Auto or Program most of the time, then the controls of the T3i are more than enough for your needs. If you work in Av, Tv, or M modes and need quicker and more direct access to your controls and the extra top LCD screen to view and change your current settings, then you have to think about the 60D or 7D over the T3i.

Menus and Custom Functions: These let for greater control over customizing how the camera functions. The T3i has less Menu and Custom Function setting alternatives than the 60D, and the 7D has still some more than the 60D. These settings enable you to customize the operation, function, and controls to work how you want them to, as well as things like contact increments, peripheral illuminations correction for lenses (fixes black corners), tweaking how the autofocus system operates, setting more exact white balance settings, and customizing which button does what. There are ebooks like my Canon T3i Experience The Still Photographer’s Guide to Operation and Image Creation With the Canon Rebel T3i / EOS 600D and Your World 60D The Photographer’s Guide to Operation and Image Creation with the Canon 60D which walk you through all of the Menu settings and Custom Function settings so that you may set up your camera to work best for how you photograph, and also begin to learn to master all the advanced features, settings, and controls of these powerful dSLR camera.

Wireless Flash: Like the 7D and 60D, the T3i incorporates wireless flash triggering. This lets you to trigger many off camera flashes at different output levels. The T2i doesn’t have the feature.

Articulating LCD Screen: The big new feature that the 60D and T3i have that the 7D and T2i don’t is the articulating rear LCD screen. This may prove useful for videographers, also as for setting up compositions while the camera is on a tripod, for macro use, or for using it from unusually low or high vantage points. Many users will be able to avoid purchasing an costly angle finder because of this feature. There’s also an electronic level in the 7D and 60D, observable in the viewfinder, rear LCD, or top LCD.

Viewfinder: The T3i has a pentamirror viewfinder with 95 coverage of the real ensuing image. The 60D has a big, bright pentaprism viewfinder with 96 coverage, not quite as nice as the almost 100 view of the 7D pentaprism.

Processor: The T3i shares the same Digic four processor as the 60D. The 7D has dual Digic four processors. But, if you do not have to shoot dozens of uninterrupted pictures, you most likely will not notice any processing speed issues.

Continuous Shooting Speed: The T3i can shoot 3.7 frames per second. The 7D can shoot a blazing eight frames per second, in which the photos barely change from frame to frame. The 60D can shoot a respectable 5.3 fps which is really a more useful rate. If you need the very high fps for sports, wildlife, or another action shooting, get the 7D. If not, do not be swayed by this extreme feature.

Memory Card: The T3i and 60D use the SD memory card. The 7D uses the CF card.

Battery: The T3i and T2i use the smaller LP E8 battery with less capacity than the LP E6 battery used by the 60D and 7D.

Size and Weight: The T3i is smaller and lighter than the 60D, which in turn is smaller and lighter than the 7D. I’m not a camera expert, but rather, I am a busy mom who loves to take pictures and who adores my subjects. This, then, is a review from a busy mom/amateur’s point of view.

MY GOALS/EXPECTATIONS:

I have generally been a photo fiend, taking my camera everywhere and pulling it out at any opportunity. While I’d gotten to a decent level of archiving vital times with my point and shoot cameras over the years, I wanted to take my photography to the next level. I has been inspired by my brother in law’s photos of his kids to take the dSLR plunge. But I knew (and still know), little about professional photography. I wanted to start taking better photos now. But I also wanted to have room to grow as a photographer and a camera that could grow with me.

I also wanted the concentrate to stay firmly on my family while I was wanting to invest many time and care into the camera, I did not want it to become like a pet I had to constantly watch over. While any dSLR takes many care and consideration, I have found the T3i was an excellent camera for me and I have been quite happy with it.

PROS:

USER FRIENDLY: The auto mode (or auto without flash, my favorite) is greatly forgiving, taking very sharp pictures, true to color. They look so clear that I feel I am capturing as close to real life as I have ever seen before in a camera.

FAST: While I on occasion go in for trying out new modes and manual settings, I frequently leave the camera in auto or auto sans flash mode and just click away so that I can at least catch a moment before it is gone. I then play with manual settings if my kids stay still long enough for me to attempt something new. My last cameras generally had a awful delay for the autofocus (the only mode they typically had), meaning I almost generally lost the moment when the toddler was on the move. The t3i is so ridiculously fast that I can snap many pics in the time one picture took before.

BEAUTIFUL PICTURES: This kind of goes without saying at this tier of camera, but the pictures are just amazing quality. Coming from the land of point and shoot, I am pretty blown away. And I know I am only touching the tip of the iceberg for what is possible.

BEAUTIFUL VIDEO: This is the nice new feature of the t3i. I was not sure I’d want or need the HD video. But hey, when you have got it, you use it. I have gotten many surprisingly clear footage of the kiddo playing in the park with daddy and I am so happy we went for the model with that feature.

BIG, CLEAR DISPLAY: it is really easy to see what pics you have just taken and change your photo taking therefore. Just by seeing what I have gotten, I am able to attempt again and improve a shot nearly now.

CLEAR MENUS/ABILITY TO IMPROVE: The interface on this is so intuitive that I have been able to learn many without cracking open the manual (though that manual is my new reading material). The entry point for a new user is just a step up from normal photography the possibilities, but, are almost endless.

NICE KIT LENS: For all that photographers get into new and better lenses, the kit lens on this is really nice and easy to use. I think it’ll hold us for a good long while before I get to be more of an expert. It gives me the range of zoom and concentrate I need for now.

EYE FI COMPATIBLE: WOW. I can not tell you how much this busy mom loves this feature. If you get an eye fi card, your pictures may be set up to automatically upload to your computer whenever you’re inside range of your synched wireless network. My husband set up a SmugMug account and the eye fi potential. I take pics to my heart’s content while out on walks, in the park, etc., and come home, then leave the camera on (auto shut off after eight minutes) to upload the pics. I can then tag and sort pictures afterward at my leisure. For a busy mom, this is surprisingly useful. I do not have to take time out to upload the pics the camera does that for me.

BATTERY LIFE (for common use): So far, the battery we bought for the camera lasts well throughout normal photo taking. It is just a regular Canon battery for the rebel line and it charges quickly. When taking pics like a mad woman, it lasts through a shoot. HD video eats it up more quickly, so be warned. Still, I rarely run out of juice throughout the day so long as I pop the battery into its charger in the evening. But, uploading is another story (See below in cons).

Those are just the 1st not many things I love about this camera. Here, but, are the.Not cons, really, just challenges for a busy mom:

CHALLENGES:

DSLRs ARE costly, fragile, BIG AND BULKY:

And busy parents’ lives have enough precious and fragile things to worry about namely, the kids. No to get around it you can not just toss a dSLR into a pocket and go. I am in a quest for a good bag/carrying solution (heh, yeah, wish me luck with that.) and I am trying to get used to having one part of my brain keeping an eye on the camera also as keeping the most of my concentrate on the kids. When I am in photo journalist mode, it is no problem, but switching back to mom mode is the hard part. I have already seen the camera knocked onto the ground (a short distance onto soft ground, so it was okay, but still, the experience practically gave me a heart attack) and once, when bending over, I caught the toddler on the temple with the kit lens (She sobbed. I felt so awful!) This thing requires constant awareness to both the camera AND the kids when using it. I am quickly adjusting, but if you are not totally dedicated to learning to use and love the dSLR, you may want to stick to really good point and shoot camera if you are a busy parent.

that is really the big one.

BATTERY LIFE (when uploading pics via eye fi): Uploading pictures by eye fi looks to eat the battery alive. It appears that the camera will not autoshutoff when uploading, so this morning, after some hours of uploading big, glorious pictures to my SmugMug account, the battery ran out of juice. I wish there was a plug in mode or many sort of docking station I could input the camera into when I return home. If it is only some pics, they upload and the camera shuts itself off. But if it is a bunch of pics (and when the weather’s nice and the lighting’s good, I take many of pics), the camera requires a battery recharge just to finish uploading my pictures.

SWIVEL SCREEN WORRIES: I find that the swivel screen, while hugely useful, is something I constantly worry that I am going to snap off. But, you may be able to keep it closed with the screen facing in(a nice feature) or tuck it onto the camera with the screen facing out. I also find if I am looking out of the eye piece, I leave cheek smudges all over the screen when its facing out.

MANUAL MODE GOOFS: many of my manual mode forays have been less than stellar. I have taken a shot set up so nice, concentrate just perfect, subject just so. Only to learn I left it in white balance modification for indoors and I was outdoors so the whole picture seems I dipped it in blue. I have learned to take pics in auto mode 1st before experimenting too much. I also learned to check the screen many before proceeding.

SUMMARY: While the dSLR has obliged me to make many modifications for as well as it in my busy life, I really love this camera, am happy with the investment, am inspired by its easy use, and I LOVE the pictures I have gotten of my family.

5 STARS: And so I give it five stars my whole point in purchasing a nice camera was to make and preserve FAMILY memories and the t3i records those memories beautifully in .Jpg, raw, or HD video with a minimum of dSLR fuss.

UPDATE: about six months afterward

STILL AWESOME: I totally stand by the above review. If anything, I have come to adore this camera more than I did when we 1st got it. When baby #2 arrived, the quality of pictures that we got far surpassed the pictures from the 1st baby’s photo shoots. I am really happy with this investment, as the pictures we get are lovely, clear, true to light/true to color, and just catch the memories so well. Really, this is EXACTLY what I hoped for as an amateur photographer/mom.

GOT BETTER:

Battery Woes: We invested in an A/C adapter for the camera and now not eat the battery alive when leaving the camera to upload pictures via the Eye Fi connection. It is a little annoying to have to exchange over to the A/C , then back to a battery all the time I could rather have a charging station of kinds but it works and it means I stick the battery in the charger so it is nearly generally prepared to go.

Ease of Use: I adjusted to using this thing pretty quickly. I invested in a LowePro FastPack 250 and it works nicely as a diaper bag/day bag/camera bag. Not the most nice purse, but it works well. I am much better at being prepared for any photo situation now.

Swivel Screen: No problems to report. I just leave it screen out all the time.

SAME: Awesome camera all around. Really, really remarkable. There may be higher tiers of quality out there, but for what I use in following the kids around, this captures amazing shots quickly. Love it.

GOT (just a little) WORSE:

Eye Fi Annoyance: This is going to differ from person to person, but our Eye Fi stuff has had many kinks to work out. The card we bought obliged some number of updates recently, then we had to change SmugMug account stuff, but the changed password meant Eye Fi could not upload. Blah, blah, blah, I am sure most of the problem is ME not to get the changes my hubby made. Still, Eye Fi is typically auto, but from time to time, it requires maintenance and understanding from all parties uploading stuff. Just be warned, it is not so automagical as I hoped it could be.

Other than that though, awesome camera. I am really loving it. On the whole, a Lotta camera for Low maintenance.
